My Review:

I’ve read both of the previous books in this series, and this one has been my favourite to date.

Alex is getting older, his death ever closer, yet his relationship with Ashley has never been stronger. As they head for India, more fighting awaits, but so does the beauty of the area. I can honestly say that no one brings a scene to life in such a vivid way as Jennifer Macaire. The colours, smells, sounds and tastes are all so perfect in their detail. For instance, the jungle garden, the glass bell diving scenes … Stunning!

Ashley shows more of herself in this story, and references to her past before the time travel are introduced in such a way as to make you believe she was really meant to be the wife of Alexander the Great. Comparing her life to the spoilt, evil Roxanne, it’s inevitable to see similarities. Yet they are polar opposites.

Ashley shows her humorous side in some of the comparisons she makes between this world and her own; this fun side of her really brings the modern world into the story – she is such a product of her environment, and some habits of her new world are not easy for her to bear, though bear them she must.

I loved the Valley of the Gods when they finally catch up with their son. His calm, accepting nature is so endearing. To think it has been foretold that such a sweet child will be a force for destruction seems unlikely, yet it is soon shown to be true. Leaving him behind is heartbreaking. I truly hope the next book sees them all reunited.

This is a more emotional book where Ashley and Alex’s relationship is tested, their encounter with Paul is beautiful and sad, and then there is Bucephalus – I had tears in my eyes reading about this horse. Never mind all the human bloodshed, the horse got to me!

With Alex having less than a year to live now, I need to know how this all ends. I want a happy ending, and there are signs that something amazing may yet still happen to thwart the history books. I live in hope.

An excellent read, and I’m sad to think the end is in sight.
