Blog Tour ‘n’ Book Review – The Perfect Couple

The perfect couple…or the perfect lie?

A year and a half ago, Gemma met the love of her life, Danny. Since then, their relationship has been like something out of a dream. But one Friday evening, Gemma returns home to find Danny is nowhere to be seen.

After two days with no word from her husband, Gemma turns to the police. She is horrified with what she discovers – a serial killer is on the loose in Bristol. When she sees the photos of the victims she is even more stunned…the victims all look just like Danny.

But, the detectives aren’t convinced by Gemma’s story. Why has no one apart from Gemma seen or heard from Danny in weeks? Why is there barely a trace of him in their flat? Is she telling them the truth, or are there more secrets and lies in this marriage than meets the eye?

My Review

4/5 stars

This story immediately drew me in, and kept me wondering what had really happened to Danny until the truth came out. At that point, there were moments that me go …’Er, but …’ a few times. I n particular, I felt to Helena, the DCI in charge was a tad too focused on Gemma being responsible for Danny’s disappearance / death (although his dead body hadn’t been found). When it came to questioning others, especially Quinn, Danny’s cousin, Helena seemed too happy to take any “evidence” that put Gemma in the hot seat. She disputed why he might put himself on the radar, yet never gave the same consideration to Gemma.

The nature of the story did involve a lot of repetition as stories were told and retold, but that didn’t detract from the pace or the suspense. If any, it set me – the reader – up for some clever misdirection.

As expected, the ending proved to be a great twist – who’da thunk it? Once revealed, the killer could really only ever have been that individual. It makes perfect sense now.

Well written, with an easy to follow style, this story really does deliver in terms of the many twists and turns, and once you’re sucked in you won’t want to stop until you know what really happened.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book.

A spooky mansion in the Georgia mountains with an outrageous cast of characters. Spiders, snakes, meth-heads and serial killers, oh my! Venom! ain’t your average gothic mystery, folks.
But who would expect it to be when Natalie McMasters is involved? She’s fallen madly in love with two people—her wife, Lupe, and Danny, her partner at the 3M Detective Agency. Rather than choose one of them as her life partner, she’s decided to have them both, and roped them into a relationship retreat in rural Georgia to learn how to live as a polyamorous family.
But Nattie finds more than she bargained for in the sleepy town of Greypeak. A methamphetamine operation. A snake-handling preacher. A retired FBI agent hunting a serial killer. And a charismatic psychologist who just might have his own agenda for his clients.
Nattie ultimately finds herself in the most dangerous situation she’s ever faced, which may well solve her relationship problems by costing her life. Is this really the last book in the Natalie McMasters series?

Blog Tour ‘n’ Book Review – Landsliding

When Julia’s husband leaves her, and their small son Matty, to live with another woman, her friends, especially Caroline and Vick, rally round to help. But when Julia starts a new relationship, after a chance meeting, her friends are not quite as supportive.

Julia sees Brendan, the quietly spoken IT guy who comes round to fix her computer, as a loving and protective man and, as time passes, a potential father figure for Matty. Caroline and Vick, on the other hand, see him as jealous, controlling and potentially dangerous. He appears to be a man with a secret past.

What her friends don’t know is that Julia has secrets of her own which, if they get out, will almost certainly shatter her fragile domestic bliss.

Landsliding is a compelling drama that turns your expectations on their head with a subtle twist that will leave you wondering where your sympathies lie.

My Review

The story centres on Julia, a woman unaware of how stunning she is yet also very insecure as a result of secrets bottled up from her childhood. After her husband, Harry, leaves her and son Matty, Julia is at a loss what to do. She relies on her friends Caro and Vick, and especially their husbands, to support, advise, help, mend, fix and basically everything. Realising she needs to find a job and start taking control of her life, her search begins on the Internet.  When her laptop breaks down, she can’t ask her friends to help and has to find someone technically able to do so. She calls a number from an ad in her local free paper, and Brendan Baker responds. He is prompt, capable and friendly. For the first time in ages, Julia enjoys chatting with someone new. And, of course, Brendan is smitten by her too. Their friendship blossoms, and soon Brendan is her go-to person for anything and everything, much to the disappointment and disapproval of Caro and Vick. Caro, in particular, feels left out, and finds Brendan a tad creepy. As the story develops, Julia becomes distanced from Caro and Vick, mainly because of Brendan’s desire to be the only person in hers and Matty’s life.

Creepy, and mildly disturbing indeed.

The story is told in first person initially, reflecting Julia’s and Caro’s thoughts on how Julia is coping without Harry. Then, when Brendan arrives, his story is told in the third person. This all works really well to distinguish the present from the past, and also to provide foresight into what may be ahead. There is a lot of supposition which makes for a tense read, and had me reading ‘just one more chapter’ to see how the story would unfurl.

You see, Brendan has secrets of his own too. There’s a reason why his former partner left him, and one he is scared to reveal to Julia in case their relationship goes the same way. With Caro stuck in the middle, wanting to support Julia and to discredit Brendan at any opportunity, the tension ratchets up a notch with each new chapter.

The storyline feels very realistic, and shows just how easy it is to be sucked into a new relationship when you’re still grieving the last one. Both Julia and Brendan carry baggage that they keep closed off from everyone. The intrigue is high, the drama too – what is Brendan hiding? (Julia’s secret is revealed to the reader early on) When the truth comes out, as it inevitably must, then alarm bells start to ring.

As the pace quickened as the tension mounted, I was ready for fireworks. Instead, for me, the ending was a pretty display of sparklers. There was an element of shock, but it vanished into warm and fuzzy. I guess that’s why this is categorised as women’s fiction and not a tense psychological thriller. Don’t get me wrong, it was a compelling read but it seemed to morph genres and left me with an ending I didn’t expect.

I’d definitely read more by this author, though. I loved the delivery of the story, the separation of the present and the past, the two womens’ thoughts so easily distinguishable from Brendan’s. A novel way to present a story, and one that takes a different path to resolution.

Drama, suspicion and mistrust play off against a desire for a happy ending. In a nutshell, quality storytelling with great pace and plenty of suspense and intrigue.

Voiceover artistry is the perfect marriage of her life’s two passions, and she couldn’t be happier with this new career pursuit.

4/5 stars

At 12 hours and 30 minutes long, this was definitely a story within a story within a story. Following on from where book one finished, Scarlet and Sylvia now have a new, larger studio to match their larger audience. Their show, Mending Men, has changed and now includes experts to give advice to men on legal and family matters – from divorce and alimony to grief counselling.

When Scarlet gets a call warning her that she needs to look into a matter concerning someone she knows, thoughts immediately turn to her sister Violet who is living in a “commune” that doesn’t allow visitors from family members. Convinced Violet is in danger, Scarlet and her friends (boyfriend James, plus Tom & Niles) check out the place …and don’t like what they see.

A further clue leads her to a photographer, who she knows from her childhood days as a beauty queen contestant with her sister. All clues point to the commune, so the friends make a visit to their local spy gadget shop and virtually empty the shelves. These scenes resemble those when James Bond visited Q to see all the gadgetry available. Tom’s excitement here is hilarious.

While all this is going on, Scarlet’s brother has disappeared. His wife, Lisa, is unperturbed, as she agrees with her “pastor” that things in her marriage need to change.

From here, the story splits into yet more subplots, all of which come together by the end. But who would have known that a homeless man by the dumpster, a baker, and a man dressed as a cleaning lady would have anything in common in this story? The plot ideas are wild, and funny, poignant and crazy. As before, the story is slow to get going, but once it does it is a wild race to the finish.

Is Violet in danger? Where is Trent? Is there a cult at large? And why does the commune need a photographer?

All will be explained in this cosy mystery tale, where stories of family members and friends mingle with the crime solving capers.

The narrator keeps the story buzzing, injecting life into every character, and keeping them distinct and therefore making it easy to follow.

A little on the long side, but an enjoyable story and a fun and endearing cast of characters.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Michaela James. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it. Dream Cast

Q&A with Author Michaela James
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • My novels are heavy in dialogue, so an audiobook is absolutely in the back of my mind while writing.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • I found a sample of Kimberly’s talents on and contacted her right away. Fortunately, she was in between assignments and available.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process?
    • Kimberly requested to read the book prior to agreeing to narrate. She then sent a very in depth questionnaire regarding how I envisioned the characters. This helped her to voice them to match my vision.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Marilyn Oaks is a modern day Mrs. Bennet.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Absolutely. I have an Audible account and listen to audiobooks every evening and on long car journeys.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • I feel that Kimberly brings my characters to life, which is to me the true beauty of an audiobook.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • I would use it to go back to Jane Austen’s time. It would be fascinating to witness the manners and customs. I love the formality and politeness of the correspondence in that era.
  • Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
    • Really try to find the right narrator. A weak narrator can hurt your book. A good one may cost you more, but it’s so worth it in the long run. Be patient, it’s not an overnight process.
  • What’s next for you?
    • Kimberly Wetherell is in the process of narrating Book 3 in the series, Scarlet Oaks and the Banished Witness. I’m writing Book 4, Scarlet Oaks and the Hollow Man.

A Venomous Love by Chris Karlsen

The killer whispered-“A pretty damsel…worth a pretty risk.”

A veteran, Detective Rudyard Bloodstone has fought a brutal battle and witnessed war horrors that haunt his nightmares. Now one of those horrors has followed him home from Africa. A vicious predator, the Cape cobra, can kill a man in thirty minutes. A suspect using the snake as a weapon in robberies is terrorizing London. When the crimes escalate into murder, a victim’s daughter, Honoria Underhill, becomes the focus of the killer. After several attempts on her life, Scotland Yard threatens to take over the high profile case. With few leads to follow, Bloodstone and his partner must now fight department politics and catch the killer before Underhill becomes another murder victim.

Read an excerpt:

Puzzled, Ruddy asked, “You say the body is still in the chapel? Couldn’t the nurse bring an exam table to put him on and start treatment?” “She did. Young and I attempted to help but he suffered violent convulsions. Because the hospital is for children, they don’t have restraints. The head nurse instructed us to leave him back on the floor. She was afraid he’d fall off the table.” “Makes sense.” The timeframe of Underhill’s death didn’t make sense. At minimum it usually took an hour and more often, hours for the venom to kill. A horrible thought occurred to Ruddy. What if it was a different suspect with a different lethal snake? “But he died while you were still here?” “Yes. He convulsed brutally hard a few more times and an excessive amount of drool came out his mouth. Then he lost consciousness. A nurse put a blanket over him and a pillow under his head. He died as she was making him comfortable.” “Strange. This is abnormally fast even for cobra venom.” Flanders stepped up on Ruddy’s right. “What is it, constable?” “Shall I leave you to start my search?” Flanders asked. “Yes. Collect anything, and I mean anything, you find that looks out of the ordinary,” Archie told him. “This case is so unusual we can’t be sure what is important and what isn’t.” The nurse led them to the curtained-off bed. Honoria Underhill lay on her side softly sobbing. Her legs were curled up so she fit on the short bed meant for a child. The nurses had covered her with a blanket. When she saw Ruddy and Archie, she sat up and swung her legs down to the side of the bed. “Yes. We know this is traumatic for you but we need to ask you to repeat what happened with as much detail as you can recall,” Ruddy told her. “I understand.” Her shoulders trembled. She buried her fists in her skirt and kept her head down as she fought to control her emotions. Ruddy brought the conversation back to the crime. “Did the suspect say anything when he attacked?” “’A pretty little damsel, worth a pretty risk,’ he said as he rushed toward us. Then he leapt at me with the snake in hand inches from my face. Father pushed me out of the man’s reach and stepped between us. My father tried to knock the man’s hand away and swatted at the animal.” She dabbed at her nose again and then offered the handkerchief back to Archie who waved off the return. “It happened so fast,” Honoria continued. “In the time it took me to blink, the snake’s throat blew outward, like a fan opening.” She demonstrated the action with her hands. “A second later it lunged and struck.” *** Excerpt from A Venomous Love by Chris Karlsen. My Review

5/5 stars

This is not the first book I’ve read by KJ McGillick, and it sure won’t be the last. She is definitely one of my go-to authors and I know she’ll deliver. In Spider Games, the first in the A Conspiracy of Betrayal series, she does exactly that.

The story centres around Kate o’Brien, a  family court lawyer who runs a legal practice with a friend, colleague and business partner, Bill Brown, ably assisted by the fabulous Paralegal, Norma. Things are progressing steadily, business is decent and Kate seems to have successfully put an abusive past behind her.

When she is asked to stand in for Bill to attend a bail hearing for one of his clients, Kate soon realises she’s in over her head. With a murder charge in the offing, the client is uncooperative and Bill is nowhere to be found. When she finally tracks Bill down, she is moved aside as the FBI swoop in.  Kate is shocked and defensive of Bill, until it becomes apparent that he does not afford her with the same concern. Forging her signature is the least of his misdemeanours when we learn Bill has implicated Kate in every step of his web of lies and deceit.

For Kate, extricating herself from his crimes and keeping herself and Norma safe becomes a major concern. Threats come at her from all angles, some with devastating effect.

Spider Games is a fast moving story. Once you start it, you’re in for the long haul. This is a series I’ll be following closely. Book one had all my favourite elements in a story – court cases, FBI agents, art and culture crime, Toby the cat, quick wit and sharp dialogue from a whole host of great characters … all progressing at breakneck speed into a cohesive whole.

In a time when escapism is worth its weight in gold, you can do no wrong in losing yourself in this latest offering by McGillick. I’d totally recommend this to fans of quality legal and crime thrillers.
