Blog Tour ‘n’ Book Review – Summer in Provence (with giveaway)

Summer in Provence

Is a change as good as a rest?

When married couple Fern and Aiden have a windfall, their reactions could not be more different. While Fern is content to pay off their mortgage and build a nest egg before starting a family, her husband is set on traveling the world.

Fern’s not much of a back-packer so, before she knows it, the idea of a ‘marriage gap year’ takes shape. And, as Aiden heads off to the wilds of Australia, Fern chooses the more restful Provence for her year out.

Set amidst the glorious French scenery, Château de Vernon offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of normal life, and Fern agrees to help out in return for painting lessons from the owner – renowned, but rather troubled, painter Nico.

As their year unfolds in very different ways, will the time apart transform their marriage, or will it drive Fern and Aiden even further apart…

Let Lucy Coleman whisk you off on a heart-warming, sun-drenched and magical French adventure.

My Review

4.5/5 stars

This book took me totally by surprise. I’ll admit to struggling to get into the story at first, but after the first 20% I was hooked. For me, the preamble to Fern and Aiden took an inordinate amount of time, but soon after I could understand why the author had taken her time at the outset.

It was such an original storyline which was what initially attracted me, as well as having read previous books by the author. She has always managed to ground me totally to the location of her stories, whether it be Versailles, or now in Provence. I felt like Fern’s shadow, not just witnessing what she saw but understanding her concerns, her pain, and latterly her new found joy of painting. If it were possible, I’d be booking my tickets there right away.

The pacing turned out to be perfect for this story; the slow start necessary, the settling in scenes vital, and the ending just beautiful but not without some heartache on the way.

A story of self-discovery that felt so natural, unhurried, atmospheric, and captivating. Not your traditional romance, but definitely one that suited me, and one that will make me pick up more of this author’s books in an instant. Lucy Coleman is an author I trust implicitly to deliver a complete experience.

If you decide to delve in – and you should – be prepared to let the story happen at its own pace. You’ll be glad you waited for it. Fans of upmarket women’s fiction will love this.

My Review:

4/5 stars

Ah, the Palace of Versailles …. what a backdrop to a story. As a fan of the recent TV series, how could I miss this one!  The author knows her stuff – this was a veritable tour guide within a story of of secrets, misunderstandings, family history and future endeavours (by which I mean romance, of course!) With beautiful descriptions, charming characters, and ·D detail, Lucy Coleman brings this gorgeous part of France to life, not just the palace but the people who work thee, the locals who live there and the gardeners whose past is intricately linked to the flowerbeds and topiaries. No wonder, Lexie, the MC, is so enamoured of the place. Clearly, her grandmother’s story is a huge reason for bringing her to Versailles, but once there, the location begins to weave its magic on Lexie’s own life.

The story is multilayered, with secrets from the past coming to the fore, and impacting new lives. A slow-burning romance develops between Lexie and her translator, Ronan as they tackle the job of making the documentary and uncovering the secrets of the past, not realising how their two families were connected already. This is the kind of story where it takes a whole village to tell the tale, from Lexie’s neighbour in the row of gorgeous cottages, to the owners of the flat where her grandmother lived, over the flowershop. Not forgetting the interviewees, some more reluctant to talk than others (well, one in particular) whose connections to the Palace help to flesh out Lexie’s dream project.

You can tell this was a labour of love for Lexie, her enthusiasm is unerring, as is her determination to get the documentary finished when events beyond her control throw a curve ball in its direction.

This is a heart-warming story, so easy to get engrossed in, with drama and red herrings, misunderstandings and even a touch of bitterness. Yet the tale comes together with aplomb. You’d expect nothing less than perfection from such a grand and elegant venue, and you won’t be disappointed.

He might be the sexiest man in London, according to his fan site (which he definitely writes himself), but he’s also the most arrogant man she’s ever met.

She might have the longest legs he’s ever seen, but she also has the sharpest tongue.

For years, rival TV presenters Sabrina Carlton and Nick Davenport have traded barbs on their respective shows. The public can’t get enough of their feud, but after Nick airs Sabrina’s family scandals to all of Britain, the gloves are off. They can barely be in the same room together—but these longtime enemies are about to become the unlikeliest of cohosts.

With their reputations on the rocks, Sabrina and Nick have one last chance to save their careers. If they can resurrect a sinking morning show, they’ll still have a future in television. But with ratings at an all-time low and a Christmas Eve deadline to win back the nation’s favor, the clock is ticking—and someone on their staff doesn’t want them to succeed.

Small mishaps on set start adding up, and Sabrina and Nick find themselves—quelle horreur—working together to hunt down the saboteur…and discovering they might have more in common than they thought. When a fiery encounter is caught on camera, the public is convinced that the reluctant co-hosts are secretly lusting after one another.

The public might not be wrong.

Their chemistry has always been explosive, but with hate turning to love, the stakes are rising and everything is on the line. Neither is sure if they can trust these new feelings…or if they’ll still have a job in the New Year.

Excerpt

Their boss started turning her pen in circles again. “You are correct in that you’ve both knocked yourselves out of contention for the evening show. That position will be offered elsewhere.”

Sabrina released a long breath, and Nick closed his eyes momentarily.

“So that’s it?” she said, with a slight feeling of unreality. Despite the setbacks since the summer, apparently she hadn’t really expected this to happen. “We’re both out?”

“Of the evening programming, yes. Your nights are going to be considerably more open.” Hania looked past Sabrina again, as the office door opened. “But if you agree to my suggestion, you’re also going to have to start getting up a lot earlier.”

Nick turned his head first, and his entire body went still.

She swung around and was greeted with her own smiling face on a full-length poster board. Her printed image had been placed back-to-back with Nick’s, and someone had done some excessive editing, because she’d never leaned on him in her life.

Her gaze travelled from their glossy heads to the sarcastic advertising copy scrawled across the cardboard: ’tis the season for peace and goodwill. And miracles. Wake Me Up London with Sabrina Carlton and Nick Davenport, weekdays at seven throughout December.

They broke the silence with an unusually united sentiment.

“Oh, I don’t think so.” Sabrina physically retreated from the horrifying prospect.

“I hope that’s a bad joke.” Palpable outrage from Nick. His fingertips were digging hard enough into the arm of his chair that she could see his knuckles flexing. “I don’t mind the odd piece of human-interest filler—nobody wants doom and gloom 24/7 and there are people who deserve recognition—but the morning show has been egregious rubbish for years. If you seriously think I’m going to sit there and smile inanely while people with too much time on their hands argue about—what was one of their scintillating topics, the ethics of putting tutus on puppies?—you can think again. And why am I second billing on the poster?”

“Alphabetical and moral seniority,” Sabrina said breezily. He was so annoyed that she’d recovered a bit of composure in response. She inclined her head towards their chummy-looking cardboard selves. “And it pains me to state the obvious, but you’re literally the poster boy for inane smiles, Troy McClure. Bit late to change your brand now.”

Nick’s jaw had stopped twitching, but his eye picked up the slack.

From her seat close to the offending poster, a member of the social media team cleared her throat. “Er…is the plan to boost WMUL’s embarrassingly shit ratings by turning the set into a Hamlet-style bloodbath? Because it’ll be job well done in any scenario that puts them on the same couch.”

“I’ve worked for the network since I was twenty-one,” Nick said, slipping back into his shield of drawling amiability. It tended to net more wins. One may smile, and smile, and be a villain. “I’ve headlined alone for almost four years, and I’ve made a damn good job of it.”

“Yes, you have,” Hania agreed. “You’re excellent at your job. Witty, tenacious, attractive—the public accolades are spot-on.” Before Nick’s head could expand too far, she continued, “You also humiliated your boss in a public forum. If you wanted to keep your name on the evening billing, you should have exercised some discretion. You’re on such thin ice here that one false step is going to drop you right in it. I hope I’m making myself clear.”

She walked around her desk to sweep a glance up and down the poster board, before she leaned a companionable elbow on it. “Happily for us all, the public is fascinated with your obvious feud. You surmise correctly that Wake Me Up London is in a losing battle where the ratings are concerned. I have a feeling that the two of you could salvage that situation.”

Nick opened his mouth again, and Hania finished, “And you’ve got from the beginning of December until Christmas Eve to prove me right.”

When Chrissie and Keith meet in the park, a friendship begins beneath spring cherry blossoms as they seek shelter from their messy lives. But as romance sparks, they must run a gauntlet of calamities that threaten to keep them apart. Can they find what it takes to overcome the mayhem and give love one last chance, or risk a future filled with regret?

Treat yourself to THE NEXT FOREVER, a sweet, funny, feel-good story about family, friendship, and falling in love when you least expect it.

Add to Goodreads

My Review

Earlier this year, I read the author’s first Fairhill novel – The Perfect Moment – and was instantly charmed by the characters, especially Keith McGraw. For him to get his own story delighted me, giving me hope that he would get his own chance at happiness. The Next Forever shines a spotlight on Keith, one he thoroughly deserves.

As a thrice-married, thrice-divorced lover of fine Whisky, Keith has all but given up on finding someone with whom to share his life. He books a tour of whisky distilleries, a tour he has promised himself for a long time and one which he is prepared to take alone. Aww! Bless him.

Unfortunately, Janice happens – his ex-wife turns up, sobbing and desperate, the night before he’s due to leave on his trip. There’s no way he can go now – not because he has any feelings still for Janice, but because he dare not leave her alone in his pub. So, he cancels.

Having offered to sort out a wedding cake for a customer-friend, Big Kev who is struggling to keep up with his wedding to-do list – because that’s the kind of man Keith is: big-hearted and generous – Keith heads to Chrissie’s cakes.

Chrissie finds herself in the shop on her day off after a distressed bride-to-be gets into tizz over her wedding cake (such a tizz that the young woman has even got the date of her appointment with Chrissie wrong) when Keith arrives, and despite being swamped with orders , she agrees to take his order – because that’s the kind of woman she is: warm-hearted and selfless.

You can see where this is going, right?

Chrissie, living alone until recently, is now feeling the stress of accommodating her daughter, her daughter’s boyfriend, and their young child. Her home is not her own anymore, and the boyfriend is a prolific DIY disaster who wrecks more of Chrissie’s belongings than he repairs. Add to that, her mother has entered her in a cake competition at an upcoming wedding fayre.

So, when both Chrissie and Keith escape the dilemmas of their home lives for a breath of fresh air, they find each other on a park bench beneath the cherry trees.

A friendship blossoms, one that has great potential for a future relationship. It’s as if their lives aligned on the park bench that night. But of course, the road to romance is cluttered with one issue after another that sees their attempt to even go out to dinner thwarted time and time again. Misunderstandings, overreactions, self-doubt and thoughts of being unworthy of love seek to keep them apart.

The story is brimming with realistic characters, believable circumstances, unfortunate external interferences and so much humour. Often, it is Keith and Chrissie themselves, who suffer as a result of their own generosity and sense of duty. Such is their nature to care for and help others that their commitments impede their own chance of happiness.

Both characters ooze warmth, and will have you onside from the start, willing them to be together. Their journey is tested by real-life situations and frustrations, all of which makes it such an easy, effortless read. Charming, full of heart and a lovely way to pass a few hours. Everyone should visit Fairhill for a dose of warmth, humour, charm, and hope.

Book Review – One Summer in Santorini

One Summer in Santorini

by Sandy Barker

There was something in the air that night. . .

Sarah has had enough of men. It’s time to rekindle her first true love – travel – so she books a sailing trip around the Greek islands with a group of strangers.

The very last thing Sarah wants is to meet someone new… But then a gorgeous American man boards her yacht and she knows she’s in trouble. And when she also encounters a handsome silver fox who promises her the world, she realises that trouble really does come in twos.

Will Sarah dive into a holiday fling, embark on a relationship, or stick to her plan – steer clear of men, continue her love affair with feta, and find her own way after all?

What others are saying …

The perfect holiday read to escape with this summer for fans of Annie Robertson’s My Mamma Mia Summer and Mandy Baggot’s One Last Greek Summer.

‘A summery romantic debut from a fresh voice in romantic fiction. Made me want to pack my bags for the Greek islands this instant!’ Phillipa Ashley, bestselling author of A Perfect Cornish Summer

‘A fun and flirty escapist read.’ Samantha Tonge, bestselling author of Knowing You

My Review …

A feast for the eyes with beautiful scenes of the Greek islands, a feast in general with plates of delicious Greek food, and lashings of sharp, witty humour to give you belly ache.

The story began well, with Sarah’s funny and relatable view of her break-up with Neil as told to her sister before she set off for her ‘get over it all’ jaunt around the Greek isles. On a whim she’d booked the trip – a ten-day break on a boat with strangers! And why not? After Neil, she deserved some ‘me’ time, and where better than halfway across the world, on a boat in the the middle of the ocean. If that’s not escapism, then I don’t know what is.

As we found out though, Sarah is not the luckiest of travellers – and this time was no different, losing her driver’s licence and wallet before the trip even began. Her bad luck jinx seemed to follow her everywhere, although spotting a cute American at the bus station, and then again on her bus … well, it took the edge off things. And, well, whaddya know he’s on the same trip too! Things were looking up. Or were they?

Her fellow passengers on the boat turned out to be the nicest bunch ever, restoring her faith in strangers and really helping her to relax and live in the moment. Even her roommate Hannah – a bit odd at first – became a trusted friend.

But it was her relationship with the cute American, Josh, that drove the story. She hadn’t planned on meeting anyone, let alone being as attracted to him as she clearly was. He, too, was on board just for the travel and the experience, having never left the US before, and he was most certainly not looking for love.

Despite both Sarah and Josh recognising the mutual attraction, there was a lot of ‘will they / won’t they’ going on, and this was exacerbated further with the arrival of James, aka the Silver Fox, an older, rich man who made no bones about being attracted to Sarah. She knew exactly where she stood with James; with Josh it was never totally clear, although there was a hint of jealousy when Josh realised he had a rival.

In between the ‘romance that could have been’, the group took in some amazing sights, ate some wonderful food and, as a result, bookings to Santorini will probably skyrocket as more readers learn of its beauty and that it has the best tomatoes in the world!

Saying goodbye was never going to be easy; Sarah had made some strong bonds with her fellow travellers. But as she headed back to London for a final week with her sister before flying home to Sydney, her dilemma was never more evident.

Josh, despite occasional signs to the contrary, seemed to just want a travel ‘bud’, whereas James was much keener and determined to meet up with her while she’s in London.

What’s a girl to do? She wanted a BIGGER life, but can she handle the options available to her? I guess we’ll find out in the next book. Looking forward to it already 🙂

I enjoyed this story, the imagery drew me in, the food made me drool, and the witty asides made me chuckle. I’ll definitely be back for seconds.

My thanks to Sandy Barker, Avon Books UK and Netgalley for a copy of this book. This review is all mine, and made of my own free will 😉

She lives in her home city of Glasgow with her husband and their rescue lurcher, Maggie. She enjoys pottering in the kitchen, walking in Glasgow’s many lovely parks, and is a firm believer in the therapeutic benefits of a long lunch with a big glass of wine.

My Review

Laura lost her parents at 19, during her first year at university. Her world ground to a halt, she gave up her studies and found solace working as a waitress in Valentino’s where the owners, Angelo and Natalie, became her surrogate family.

Ten years later she is still working there, her life having barely moved forward. Socially, she keeps to a tiny circle of friends, and despite dating now and then, those relationships never last. Some might suggest she has cocooned herself from further heartache – and I think they’d be right.

When Natalie, now a widow of two years, announces she is selling the restaurant, Laura’s world trembles from the aftershock. Are her self-constructed barriers in dangers of tumbling down? To avoid such a disaster, she convinces herself that Natalie only needs to find a new love, and everything will be rosy once more. But who will be the man to win Natalie’s heart and restore equilibrium in Laura’s life?

Cue Keith.

Realising she needs help to pull this off, Laura turns to Bruce who is currently helping out at his uncle’s pub – uncle Keith, that is – across the road from Valentino’s. Recently divorced after his wife cheated on him, Bruce tells himself he is biding his time until the right opportunity comes his way to enable him to move on. In essence, he is as vulnerable as Laura, but being the kind, generous man he is, he agrees to help her with her plan. Although he is concerned about putting his uncle’s feelings on the line. Keith has not be lucky in love, yet despite several failed marriages and unsuccessful dates, he hasn’t given up on love. Could he and Natalie be the perfect match?

With a bit of cunning, a date between Keith and Natalie is set up. Laura and Bruce (though, mainly Laura) look on from behind the curtains to see what transpires.

Keith, as he is prone to do, is soon enamoured with Natalie, and she enjoys his company. The experience of having male company in her life proves to her that she really is ready to move on from Valentino’s and indulge in the travel plans she and Angelo had often discussed. It would seem Laura’s plan has backfired. The restaurant will be sold, and she needs to accept that.

Spending time with Bruce as they watch events unfold between Keith and Natalie, Laura begins to trust him and open up. She has put her life on hold since her parents death. Maybe Bruce is the one to encourage her to revive her hopes and dreams.

This is a sweet story with very likeable characters that I wanted to be happy. Each has their ups and downs, and dramas along the way lead to crossed wires and all sorts of misunderstandings.

I’m not a romance reader usually, but I love the idea of this community and its people. Of course, it’s even better knowing that this is the first book in a series – yes, there’s a sequel to come, and hopefully more too. With well-rounded and relateable characters, genuine and heartwarming friendships, Bruce’s marvellous family, and lovely touches of humour, this is an enjoyable world to escape into, and the bonus comes from a burgeoning Scottish vibe that shines throughout.

If there ever was a perfect moment to start reading a new series, then this is it 😉

Excerpt

Moonlight dimly illuminated the room as Chris stumbled into his bathroom. He admired his silhouette as he walked past the mirror. Even his muscular frame was sexy in the darkness. Chris’ self-admiration was interrupted when he noticed a small figure reflecting in the corner of the mirror. His mind had always played tricks on him and, lately, the occurrence had been more consistent. As always, when he looked over his shoulder, nothing was there. This time would be no different.

When he returned to his bed, he found himself alone. His lady friend had dressed and left without making a sound although she left a note on his nightstand.

We really should stop this.’

Chris chuckled. “Lauren, that’s what you said the last time and the time before that.” Chris spoke as if talking to her. He crumpled the note and lay back on his poster bed. Deep down, he knew she was right. It was just a matter of time before Ellis found out.

As Chris stared into space, he hoped he would sleep peacefully this night. Just one night without the dream. Please, just one night.

Christian James Goodman was the epitome of a beautiful African-American man. Standing at six feet-two inches and 220 pounds, Chris defined sexy. His chiseled body and broad physique got him a lot of attention from the ladies. His warm smile and mocha color added to his style. His light hazel-green eyes simply perpetuated his swagger while his strong baritone voice made the women yearn with desire. Yes, Chris had several physical attributes that men would pay money for and the confidence to use them.

Chris was a scholar and an athlete. Having won two state championships in high school and a national championship at University of Tennessee, he looked destined for the NBA. Yet, a shattering knee injury in his senior year ended this dreams.

“God had other plans, baby.” His grandmother reminded him whenever he got down about his knee injury. After two years of playing overseas, he came back to his high school alma mater, Bradford High, as an assistant basketball coach. Christian patiently awaited his turn, now it was his first year as the head coach. The job couldn’t have come at a better time in his life.

Chris Goodman had everything he could possibly want. He had his new two-thousand square foot home in Dunwoody, an affluent suburb of Atlanta, his SUV to be practical and his motorcycle to be relaxed. He had more than his fair share of women and settling down was nowhere in his sight, that was until Mama Van brought it into his peripheral.

As she peered into the darkness, Angela wondered how she had gotten to this point. “Why me?” She asked aloud. “What did I do to deserve this?”

She had not been at work in a week. She had not eaten in days. She lacked personal hygiene. Despite the numerous phone calls and messages from family and friends, Angela never felt so alone. Her whole world was in her one-bedroom apartment. That was where she wanted to keep it.

She pulled out her journal and wrote to the one person who understood what she was going through.

Dear God,

I have got to get over him but before I do, I will make him feel the same pain I do everyday. My plan is to use his own devices to destroy him. It will be flawless. I know I am supposed to wait on You, but vengeance is all mine, Lord.

Love Angie

Angela slammed her journal shut and slid it off her desk. It landed with a loud thud. Then another thud, Angela collapsed on the floor next to the book and sobbed quietly. Her body quivered with cold. Her muscles rocked with pain. She eventually cried herself to sleep.

***

Christian woke to soaking wet sheets. His plea for a peaceful night fell on deaf ears as the same dream interrupted his night’s rest. He routinely woke with cold sweats, a hot body, and a rigid muscle. Nothing was different this morning.

His cell phone sang Tupac’s “Dear Mama”.

“Yes, ma’am?” Chris answered the phone just as the lyric, ‘Don’t you know we love you, sweet lady’ ended.

“Morning, baby. I just wanted to make sure you was up.” Mama Van’s chirpy voice made him smile.

“Yes, ma’am, I’m woke.” He muttered.

“Well, ‘sho don’t sound like it but you grown now. Mama hopes you have a good day. Love ya.”

She hung up her phone before he could respond.

Mama Van was the one woman he respected unconditionally. It was the least he owed her considering all she had done. Chris loved her with all he was.

“Making love between the sheets.” The ring tone startled him. Since it sang the Isley Brothers, he knew it meant one of the three women he was “admiring” at this time. He told himself she would have to wait—whichever one it was. He did not even check to see which one it was. He simply rubbed his fingers over his well-groomed goatee and delighted in knowing he would have sex sometime tonight.

***

Angela stumbled into her bathroom. She slept most of the day. She walked past a mirror and despised what she saw. Her 5’6” and 150 pound voluptuous frame had lost its attractiveness. ‘Life is over’ is what the mirror taunted. After releasing a hollowing scream, she shattered the image with her fists. Her life was in as many pieces.

After a cleansing cry, Angela decided to pity train had run long enough. She showered for the first time in four days. Her need for revenge drove her to make herself presentable. She found the sexiest dress in her wardrobe and draped it over her body. She wanted something that would definitely get his attention. She washed and curled her daintily-cut crop. Once she examined her work, she felt ready for exact her scandalous scheme. Once upon a time she knew his number by heart. Now she needed to thumbed through her phone to make the call.
