But for Marley, this wasn’t a problem. She had killed twice already and cheated the justice system. What were a few more bodies?

My Review

Having read “Facing A Twisted Judgment” a few months ago, I was super excited to follow the story of the paintings that had caused the in-fighting in the Bennington family and the ultimate murder of Samantha by her sister, Marley.

So, having that insight into the cast of characters for this book I settled down and waited to be entertained. I didn’t have to wait long, as once again the author took me on a fascinating ride, telling this latest story from three viewpoints.

Tallulah West, as a practitioner of family law could not have anticipated what she was letting herself in for when she “joined” the team who had initially investigated the missing paintings. But I think the icing on the cake was meeting Mary – it was for me too. Tallulah (Lulu) found herself embroiled in many a scene that challenged her rule-abiding persona, but the pursuit of justice kept her focused on the end game – which hoped to prove that Marley was the murderer who should be behind bars. With Mary as a constant “guide”, the path to justice was never dull. Mary deserves a series of her own! Just sayin’ 😉

Marley Bennington, at the centre of the story for having killed her sister in the first place, did not go on to redeem herself in this story. In fact, she proved to be just as conniving, manipulative and cold-hearted as ever. She was the sort of woman about whom no-one would have had a good word – apart from her drug dealer maybe – and even that would be doubtful. Marley expected so much from life, hated the word “no”, and looked down on almost everyone she met. Was she as clever as she thought she was? I couldn’t possibly comment. You’ll need to read the book.

Marin, the artist, had an exceptional talent for imitating the works of the great masters. Until now, she had only ever dealt in creating replicas in the style of those artists, so the job ahead of her this time was both more challenging and more dangerous. Marin wasn’t one for socializing, or for building friendships. She’d had a tough time at college and sought refuge in her art. I was on her side throughout, and so wanted the best for her. Was I surprised at how things turned out? You betcha! That was a clever twist by the author.

With great characters such as these, the story flowed along at a snappy pace with plenty of bumps in the road. At the outset there was rather a lot of exposition, both in explaining much of the legalese as well as establishing the backstory, but story soon found its groove. I loved the contrast of the serious elements of the crimes committed which were balanced with nice touches of light humour (usually disbelief at whatever Mary did or had done to get the results she did).

Another winning story from one of my new favourite authors.
