Audiobook Review – Witchy Business Mysteries

Books 1-3: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery Box Set

The last time witchy car mechanic Victoria Fox did magic, she nearly blew up half a street. Oops. No more magic for her, but is a witch who doesn’t do magic still a witch?

Well, she does have a kitty familiar named Professor Studmuffin Salvitore III. She also has a knack for inviting magical trouble to her shop’s doorstep.

Like her business rival who shows up and offers her a deal. A tempting deal, but she shuts the door in his face anyway. Moments later, his star employee drops dead.

All roads lead to Victoria as the murderer. The problem? She didn’t do it. The other problem? Almost no one believes her.

It’s now up to her and her kitty familiar to prove she’s innocent. Tiptoeing closer to the truth could put them both in danger though. And it might just take a lead paw on the gas pedal to get them out.

Witchy Business Mysteries Books 1-3: A Paranormal Cozy Mystery Box Set by Maddy Savanna

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Paranormal stories are not my usual read, but with this being a cozy mystery, I thought I’d give it go. It was actually great fun, with some bizarre but entertaining plots.
Victoria doesn’t see herself as a witch, certainly not a practising one, and she has doubts she’d ever be able to pull of any spells after her last attempt went so disastrously wrong. Her familiar, a cat by the name of Professor Studmuffin Salvitore III bakes – of course – but with the driest sense of humour and the biggest ego ever. What could possibly be any more bizarre? Maybe when Victoria tries to prevent a series of deaths (one of which is her own) and has to keep travelling back in time with a spell to do so, but is constantly thwarted by one thing or another. It’s funny, amusing, yet you can’t help be drawn into Victoria’s life and her problems.
For me, a non-American, the narration was an issue at times, usually when the narrator was in character, and the Southern accent was hard to understand. At one time, Victoria says something about “having a laff” (which to my British ears is having a laugh). However, after rerunning it a few times, I realised she meant “having a life”.
I would definitely read more in this series but think I’ll stick to reading rather than listening.
Great fun, quirky, and frequently chaotic – in the best possible way!

Blog Tour ‘n’ Book Review – Echoes of Ballard House

Book Information:

ECHOES OF BALLARDS HOUSE

BY E. DENISE BILLUPS

ABOUT ECHOES OF BALLARD HOUSE

Hidden secrets. Unearthed truths. Simone Doucet returns to uncover the sinister truth behind a series of murders within an opulent mansion in the heart of New Orleans’ Garden District.

Yearning to escape the confines of her New York City brownstone, Simone jumps at the opportunity to house-sit a gorgeous Queen Anne Victorian home in her cherished New Orleans Garden District. Upon her arrival, the walls whisper ancient voices, the owner’s parrot mimics an eerie nightly tune, and elusive footsteps echo through the floorboards. Simone quickly discovers she is not alone in this majestic house.

Tackling the afterlife alone, Simone becomes entangled in the stories of three tormented souls caught in a web of greed, hatred, and infidelity. Their deadly secrets converge in a bone-chilling tale of murder. Yet, within the grandeur of Ballard House, Simone is far from alone.

The peril she faces extends beyond the spectral world, and she will soon confront evil from both the living and the dead. What dark secret lies hidden within the walls of Ballard House?

PRAISE FOR THE SIMONE DOUCET SERIES

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Billups always packs a punch when the other worldly visitations appear, and I found myself eagerly switching back and forth from past to present day, learning of the connections between everyone involved. Watching Simone’s friendships and love interest evolve is a lovely side story, and the author’s depth of research about early 20th century American lifestyles is apparent and pays off in dividends. Toss in the early stages of COVID appearing in America, and there’s a realistic touch that grips readers until the end. What’s causing Simone’s friends to get ill, and is the ghost responsible for all the drama or an unknown illness beginning to spread around the world? I can’t wait to see what happens in a possible third installment. Thanks for making some magic happen, Ms. Billups. Amazon review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is an intoxicating novel, one that you will not be able to set down. The novel is well written, and the world building is extensive and right in shape with the story. A story line of ghosts and paranormal adventures, a girl who goes on a trip with who roommates to New Orleans. She expects to have a wild weekend, only to find it complicated by witches and ghosts and all kinds of various paranormal events. This author is able to captivate you from page one. You find yourself hanging onto the edge of your seat, never being able to set the novel down. This is a complicated, nerve racking and wonderful all at the same time. I can’t wait to read the next one. I know it will be even better. Amazon review

MY REVIEW

I’ll admit to not being a regular reader of paranormal books, and those labelled as “horror” tend to have me running for the hills, but I will always make an exception for E. Denise Billups, and in particular for the Simone Doucet series.

Why? Well, simply because this series is more than simply a story, it’s an experience. The author writes so eloquently, so evocatively that it’s impossible not to feel involved, included and in so deep you have no choice but to read till the end.

In this, the third book of the series, Simone is house-sitting for a friend, using the time to write up the story she uncovered during her last encounter with one of her ancestral spirits. What she is not aware of – and what her friend has kept from her – is the gruesome history of Ballard House. And it takes but moments for Simone’s sixth sense to alert her to something that will soon endanger her own life.

For Ballard House was the scene of an horrific crime one hundred years ago, and the victims still seek an acknowledgement of what happened, as well as a reckoning for the culprit, but more than that they seek closure. Within the walls of Ballard House lies a secret so sad, so haunting that Simone cannot ignore. The spirits need to be heard. They need someone to act for them. They need Simone to finish what was left unresolved.

As the story progresses, however, the spirits are aware of another evil, and this one threatens Simone’s ability to help, and even her life. They cannot allow evil to win again, nor will they. In telling Simone their stories, she is able not only to make sense of the events back in 1919, but also to understand that history has distorted the facts. He who was presumed guilty of the killings was not the infamous murderous axe-man that the city feared. And while revenge lay at its core, his was not the only act of vengeance that festered through successive generations.

Lies, secrets, jealousy and revenge blend together in this heady cocktail of death and devastation, and Simone – as the conduit to unravel the mysteries – discovers that her presence in Ballard House is the only way to bring peace the spirits and let the house become a home once more. But she has to survive the ordeal first.

Beautifully written, intoxicatingly immersive and hugely engrossing, Echoes of Ballard House will keep you engaged throughout. The spirits are determined to be heard, and for Simone, their stories run skin deep. The way in which the author weaves that final twist, the one that makes it so personal to Simone, seems effortless and yet inspired.

After reading this, the idea of house sitting – even for a friend or family member – may forever be off the cards, but if you must, remember to take notice of the parrot (other pets may be available)!

Genre: YA Paranormal

Julia and Charley may come from two completely different worlds, but they’ve been called the same names all their lives. Psycho. Liar. Witch. It’s the price of being a supernaturally gifted female in sexist, narrow-minded 1971. Until they’re invited to join the Stanford Research Institute. There, a team of scientists are conducting experiments on people like them – people with the ability to tell the future, read minds, move objects without lifting a finger. At first, the institute seems like a safe haven. For the first time, Julia and Charley are not alone. Surrounded by others with powers like theirs, they finally make real friends. But as the experiments become darker and more dangerous, and the test subjects’ lives are increasingly at risk, the two girls must work together to unveil the truth behind the scientists’ experiments – and the extraordinary lies they’ve been told to keep them in the dark.

A teenager still lives inside author Jennifer Alsever. She spent two decades as a professional journalist, contributing to such publications as Fortune Magazine, the New York Times, Inc Magazine and the Wall Street Journal, before letting her imagination run wild in 2016. The result is Ember’s story told in the three-book Trinity Forest Series, her first published fiction work. When not absorbed in writing, Alsever enjoys a good hike, doing some yoga, hanging with her boys, some moguls on skis, a rigorous mountain bike ride or indulging in the simple pleasures of life. Her favorites: untouched snow, frozen chocolate chips, savasina on a yoga mat and yes, bowls of pan fried brussels sprouts. She is currently working on her fifth novel titled Déjà vu.

Moira Todd is a Washington, DC-based actor. She originally hales from Mt. Hood, Oregon where the trees are always green, the mountain is always pointy, and the weather is usually rainy. It was there that she learned the secret arts of alpine skiing and whistling at the same time as you hum. While neither has proved useful in her theatre career, she remains hopeful. These days she spends most of her free time swimming, baking bread, and watching whale documentaries.

I’m not usually a reader of YA fiction, but I loved the premise of this story: the study of young adults with “special” abilities such as mind-reading and telekinesis within a government-backed research setting.

Set during the Cold War era, and told in alternating chapters from the perspectives of Julia and Charley, the story follows them their “real” lives before going to the Institute right through to a dramatic conclusion. The two girls are as opposite as can be when it comes to the background and childhood experiences, but they do share one thing: being marked out as different from the rest of their peers.

The students enjoy getting to know each other, appreciating the different skills they have. They’ve found a place that doesn’t treat them as weirdos or freaks, and their confidence and trust in each other provides them with friendships they’ve never had before.

The research institute promises to explore their abilities and to offer an explanation for them. The reason for this research is sold to them as being for the good of the nation; the kids are playing their part in helping to win the Cold War against the Soviets. Yet, things are not as they seem. The experiments get more sinister as time passes. The tests the girls and the other “skilled” students are put through have another purpose, and the scientists in charge don’t want that information to go public.

The plot builds on the basis of secrecy – the government and scientists are hiding the true purpose of the experiments, while the students are forced to hide their suspicions – if they want to stay safe … or even alive. Does everyone survive? Who will have the upper hand?

The narrator of this audiobook superbly conveys the enthusiasm of the teenagers, their innate curiosity, their need to bond with like-minded individuals, and their reaction to the danger they find themselves in. It’s impossible not to get drawn along for the ride.

The era is the perfect backdrop for this kind of story, and the twists and turns of the story perfectly suit that period in time.

The audio version of Extraordinary Lies delivers an engaging story, with great characterisation and a tense plot.

Q&A with Narrator Moira Quirk
  • How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
    • I used to narrate audiobooks as a side hustle to fill my schedule when I wasn’t acting on stage. Now that nearly all live events are canceled for the foreseeable future, I feel very lucky that I have the ability to transition to audiobook narration full time.
  • A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
    • An important part of narration, particularly fiction narration, is pacing. A background in theatre certainly helps with that, but it’s not the only thing that can.
  • What type of training have you undergone?
    • I have a Bachelor of Fine arts in Theatre.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Yes, I love audiobooks. Maybe because after reading in the studio all day, it’s nice to sit back and listen.
  • What would you say are your strongest narration abilities?
    • I think my strength is first person narration.
  • Who are your “accent inspirations”?
    • I did a lot of new accents for this book. I mostly used a lot of youtube videos for inspiration. The accent tag has been a super useful internet trend for me.
  • How did you decide how each character should sound in this title?
    • Jennifer wrote great descriptions of how the characters sound into the book. We also talked a bit about how the main characters sound before I began recording.
  • What types of things are harmful to your voice?
    • A respiratory virus!
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • I’d like to travel to the future, find out how we solve our climate crisis, and come back to get the ball rolling.
  • If you could narrate one book from your youth what would it be and why?
    • The Phantom Tollbooth. I record books for my mom, just sending her chapters whenever I get a chance, and that was one of her favorite books to read to me. I’d like to record it for her.

Excerpt

“Please let them be okay.” If I had known I would be chanting this phrase over and over again, I don’t believe I would have ever set out on this mission. If I had known that my entire world would change in just a matter of months, would I have taken the job at the haunted house? If I had been given a heads up about my DNA being different, would I have lived a different life? I don’t know; those are not options for me now. We’re too far in. We are inches away from saving many lives. We can do this. I know we can. I just don’t know what it will cost us. I have no clue how I’m going to find the dough to pay. The odds seem stacked up against us. Is that because it is impossible to accomplish what we want to, or is it because we’ve gotten too close?

AlteredHelix_mock1Altered Helix (Book One) I didn’t want to take the traditional path. First, I wasn’t ready for college. Second, I was going to live with my best friend, Tiff, and work at the Haunted House. Third, did I mention the hot guy Josh that works there too? The most exciting thing about Austria’s new job, at a local haunted house, was the fact that the toughest looking people screamed the loudest. But when she meets the boy without a home, Josh, Austria’s life takes intriguing and eventful turns. Up until now, Josh has managed to hang with his Street crowd, but they’re in danger, and so is Austria, the girl Josh recently fell for. The group finds themselves joining forces with previously considered enemies who also now find themselves in danger. Deeply compassionate and full of twists, Altered Helix captures the struggle of polarized people that must work together for the greater good. Yay! At long last the audiobook for Donn’s Shadow landed in my inbox. Was I excited? Of course. Book One was amazing in every aspect, and it was great to see the same narrator was back.

As before, this was well written,  totally absorbing and cunningly mysterious. This time, the author introduced a touch of horror, which made me wary since I’m no horror fan usually. Luckily, this was done in such a way that the story was intriguing enough to keep my attention, and the horror elements didn’t overwhelm the mystery; rather the tension ratcheted up several notches.

When the team set up ready to film at the lakeside after a spirit had previously harmed an innocent adventurer, they are rudely interrupted by the one man Mac had taken an instant dislike to. Raziel, a famous psychic debunker, arrived in Donn’s Hill determined to out those he considered frauds. Such was his determination that he had Mac and the team on his radar too. So, when he was found murdered, Mac’s name was quickly added to the suspect list. And, clearing her name proved more difficult than she expected.

The characters were well written, and Mac’s past was developed further with some letters from her mom to Gabriela (a character from book one now awaiting trial for murder / manslaughter). Continuity from book one means reading or listening the first in the series is advised, as this is a series in every sense of the word but especially with character development. As before, Striker outclassed the human contingency, and some new characters cropped up with interesting businesses …well, Donn’s Hill is not the place for your regular entrepreneur 😉

The mystery was very well written, and the ending was another winner. This author knows how to finish a story with a flourish. Another great paranormal mystery, with superb narration. I really hope there’ll be another in the series.

Q&A with Striker the cat
  • What is your full name? Do you have a nickname (if so, who calls you this)?
Striker Clair. Mac sometimes calls me “my cat” in front of other humans, which is hilarious.
  • Where do you live now, and with whom? Describe the place (home and location) and the person/people you live with.
Mac found me a really nice, warm, cozy apartment in a big yellow house not too far from Main Street in Donn’s Hill. There’s a great big tree right by the window, so I can climb up and down whenever I want. My favorite part about it is this cushy bench that runs along the inside of a round turret; it’s sunny there for most of the day and it’s a great place to nap. Usually I sleep in the soft bed Mac bought me though; she’s pretty warm so I let her share it with me.
  • What is your job?
I’m in charge of security for a TV show called the Soul Searchers. I travel with the team when they’re filming and make sure no mice or birds interfere with anything. If a ghost shows up, I keep Mac safe. She’s really important. You know… to the show.
Sometimes I help my friend Graham sell his sculptures at the Afterlife Festival. He always sells way more when I’m around!
  • What do you consider your greatest achievement so far, why?
I’m really proud of how far Mac has come since I’ve been taking care of her. When we first met, she was so lost. She didn’t even have a home. Now I make sure she’s happy and healthy, and she’s really thriving. It’s great to see!
  • Do you have a motto? If so, what is it?
“A treat in the hand is worth two in the bag.” Also, “Give me the bag.”

  • Mackenzie Clair (aka Mac) is a wanderer at heart. For Mac, home is where the people she loves are, and at the beginning of Donn’s Hill, everyone she loves has either left this life or betrayed her completely. She’s used to starting over, and her willingness to dive head first into uncharted territory serves her well as she discovers the return of a lost psychic ability to see the dead.
Mac has dark, curly hair and tends to have shadows under her blue eyes from staying up late reading. Her sweet tooth can get out of control, and her favorite snacks include lemon bars and homemade chocolate chip cookies. She loves a good cup of tea but will take coffee if somebody else made it.
  • Striker is a small tortoiseshell cat who found her way into Mac’s life just when she was needed most, as cats have a way of doing. Fond of games and cuddling, she takes care of Mac as well (or better) as Mac takes care of her, and her inquisitive nature has a way of leading her human both into and out of trouble. Favorite snack: crunchy treats from Mac’s landlord’s breast pocket.

Not many towns can boast an annual paranormal festival, but Donn’s Hill is a town like no other. Everyone has an aura, a vibe or a fascination with the paranormal. There’s even a dedicated team of ghost hunters for a TV show. Not that Mac knew this when she moved there, though she did remember her mom taking her to the festival when she was a child. It’s probably her only memory of her mom whose maternal instinct was somewhat lacking. Raised by her father, recently passed, and finding her boyfriend is a cheat, Mac packs up her belongings and heads for Donn’s Hill where she discovers an ability to communicate with the dead, who are most eager to talk to her.

Mac is a likeable character, a true bookworm, an introvert, and coffee addict – how could I not like her? 😉

Learning her new “apartment” has a ghost is the least of her problems to start with, and she keeps the fact to herself for some time, trying hard to adapt to her new surroundings and not wishing to cause a fuss. At least she has Striker the cat to share her woes. Not just any cat though, Striker comes to her defence many a time, and especially when it matters most. When her apartment ghost proves more difficult, then she calls for help from the town’s medium, Gabriela to rid her space of the now-frantic poltergeist.

Mac starts working for the ghost-hunting team, as they recognise her affinity with the spirit world, and how she seems to attract the very ghosts they are looking for. Except, ghost-hunting leads to her finding some more recently deceased residents. Solving these murders now becomes a priority.

The narration by Jessica McEvoy is well done; she plays the characters with differing tone making it easy to follow. Combined with an intriguing storyline, fascinating backdrops, and well-rounded characters the story comes alive in all its creepy eeriness and Mac’s moments of vulnerability.

Stand-out moments: Striker takes first place, swiftly followed by that windstorm …and then it’s all topped off with a great ending. I’m hooked and in this for the long haul – bring on book two!

on Tour February 1-29, 2019

Synopsis:

The Great Witches Baking Contest by Nancy Warren A baker with secrets Witches in trouble The cameras are rolling Ready, set, die.

Poppy Wilkinson is thrilled to be chosen as a contestant on The Great British Baking Contest. As an American with English roots, winning the crown as Britain’s Best Baker would open doors she’s dreamed of. In more ways than one. Appearing on the reality show is her chance to get into Broomewode Hall and uncover the secrets of her past.

But strange things are happening on the show’s set: accusations of sabotage, a black cat that shadows Poppy, suspiciously unsociable residents at Broomewode Hall—and the judges can be real witches.

There are murmurs that Broomewode is an energy vortex. It certainly makes Poppy see and do things that aren’t exactly normal, and seems to draw interesting characters to the neighborhood.

When a fellow contestant dies in mysterious circumstances, Poppy has more to worry about than burned pies and cakes that won’t rise. There’s a murderer on the loose and it’s up to Poppy and her new friends to solve the crime before it becomes a real show-stopper.

From USA Today Bestselling Author Nancy Warren, this delicious series of cozy paranormal mysteries will have you guessing until the end. Includes recipes.

CHAPTER ONE

As life-changing moments go, getting the call that I’d been chosen to compete in The Great British Baking Contest was right up there. I’d practiced, auditioned and practiced some more. I was a decent home baker, but was I really the best in Britain? Probably not. But I didn’t have to be. The contest was my way of getting into Broomewode Hall, where the show was filmed. I had my own reasons for going there that had nothing to do with baking. Still, it hadn’t been easy to be chosen. There were thousands of applicants every year and then an excruciating selection process, where the show’s producers chose twelve from the short list and made us bake on camera. Some people went to pieces; some were just really boring. They randomly selected bakers off the short list and tried out different combinations of personalities, a bit like baking, really, seeing which ingredients created the most interesting results. I quickly learned that the trick was to be a good character, try to be funny, be a good sport, pretend you didn’t notice that cameras were on you and a clock was ticking down the minutes, and still turn out a decent jam tart. Easy peasy! Not. One of the reasons they chose me for the show, I think, was that while I was British, I’d grown up in the States, which was kind of fun, as the show had become a huge hit in America. I’d also started life in a bakery. Or, more accurately, in a cardboard box outside a bakery in Norton St. Philip, a charming village near Bath in Somerset. I like to think my mother, whoever she was, chose the bakery so she knew I’d be warm and, since bakers start work so early, I’d be found. And I was. When Gareth Philpott came to work that morning, he said he looked into the box and found me wide-awake, staring up at him. Not crying, not fussing, just staring as though I’d expected him. They named me Poppy. The Philpotts would have kept me if they could have. They’re a nice family, but they already had three children, and the authorities don’t just give a family a baby because they happened to stumble across one. First they tried to find my mother or any information at all about my origins. When that proved impossible, I was adopted by Agatha and Leland Wilson, and they became my parents. They were both teachers. They’d tried for years to have their own children, and their delight in getting me was reflected in the way they pretty much turned their lives around to give me the best upbringing they could. They were loving parents, kind and patient. Strict when they had to be. We lived in Bath for the first eight years of my life, and then my dad was offered a teaching job in Seattle. I grew up there, mostly, lost the British accent, became a typical American teenager, and then when I finished high school, my folks retired and moved back to the UK. I could have stayed in Seattle. I had friends, and I could’ve gone to college there, but I chose to come back to England. I think, deep down, it’s always felt like home. Besides, like a lot of adopted kids, the mystery of my beginnings haunts me. Soon after returning to England, my folks moved to the south of France to bask in warmer weather, grow lavender and cook gourmet meals. My dad, who taught history, was writing a book. My mom was learning French. They’d saved up a nice chunk of change for me to go to college but, in spite of having teachers as parents, I never felt the urge. I was always more artistic than intellectual, so I went to an art and design college for two years, and they let me use the rest of the money toward buying a tiny cottage in Norton St. Philip. It’s probably crazy, and nobody even thinks my mother was from there, but I started my life in that village and so it pulled me back. The Philpotts still ran the bakery and were my second family. I guess you’ll always have a bond with the person who picked you up off the street as a newborn. Besides, growing up as an only child, I was fascinated by their sprawling, noisy family. I became a freelance graphic designer, which allowed me to work from home. Gina Philpott was my age and my best friend. She was also the only one who knew why I really wanted to get on that show. It went all the way back to when I was just a baby in that cardboard box. I’d been wrapped in a curious blanket. I saw my baby blanket one day when I was watching The Great British Baking Contest. They always filmed at Broomewode Hall, a Georgian manor house that wasn’t open to the public. Broomewode Hall was the seat of the Earl of Frome, Robert Champney and his family. During one of the behind-the-scenes segments on the show, Lady Frome, showed them around her home. As the camera panned around the great dining hall I was instantly transfixed by a woman in an oil painting who seemed to be wearing my baby blanket! I saw now that, in fact, it was a shawl. But the pattern was the same. I was certain of it. And from that very moment, I began my quest to find out more about Broomewode Hall. Lord and Lady Frome guarded their privacy tenaciously, and it was impossible to get access to them and their family home. Besides, what would I say? “I think one of your ancestors once wore my baby blanket? The best way I could think of to spend time there was to qualify as a baker on The Great British Baking Contest. I’d done it. Against incredible odds, I’d been chosen as one of twelve bakers. It was one step toward finding how who I really was. All I had to do now was figure out how to get the rest of the way. *** Excerpt from The Great Witches Baking Show by Nancy Warren. Copyright 2019 by Nancy Warren. My Review:

4/5 stars

This was like having the Bake Off TV series in my living room! It felt so real, as though I knew who everyone was from the get go. And, then the “incident” happened!!!

But first, some background info … Twenty-something Poppy Wilkinson was born in Britain, left in a shoe-box as a baby on the doorstep of a bakery. Her adoptive family later moved to the US, but Poppy returned; she had some unfinished business to deal with – finding out about her birth family. Her only clue, though, was seeing a painting of a woman wearing a shawl on the walls of Broomewode Hall, the pattern matching the one she’d been wrapped in.

The problem was getting access to Broomewode Hall; the family lived a reclusive life and it was only when they opened their grounds to the Baking Contest that Poppy saw a way in. Luckily, Poppy loved to bake and auditioned for the show, only to get into the final twelve. She was about to be a contestant in the very place she needed to be to further her enquiries.

The contest began, and Poppy was anxious to not be the first contestant to leave, and her mind was focused on her baking. However, once the filming was over, she set off to visit the house, not expecting to be turned away, nor to find that disaster had befallen one of her baking colleagues – and I don’t mean just a soggy bottom! – and least of all did she expect to learn that she was a witch.

Poppy’s search for information about her family continued as the police arrived to investigate the incident in the tent, requiring some contestants to stay on in the village for further questioning. While she was grateful for the extra time, her endeavours only created more questions – the family was very quick to turn her away, the cook who might have had info was strangely vague, and a stray cat seemed to appear at the oddest of times.

This is the first book in the series, and so there are many loose ends at this point which will no doubt be tied up as the story develops. Will Poppy ever find out about her birth family? How does she come to terms with her new powers as a witch? Who will win the Baking Contest? This cosy mystery series has got off to a great start; it’s lighthearted and funny, and moves at a good pace. plus there’s a recipe at the back too!

I’m certainly intrigued enough to want to know more, and I understand the next two books are being released shortly: Baker’s Coven in March & A Rolling Scone in May, which can only be good news 😉

I received a copy from the author and have reviewed this book voluntarily.

Blog Tour: A Spotlight on Wild, Dark Times

WDTimes Digital coverWild, Dark Times

Expected Publication Date:July 23rd, 2019

Genre: Urban Fantasy/ Paranormal

It’s the summer of 2012 and Elizabeth Megalos is a disillusioned art-school grad getting by as a bank teller in St. Louis. One evening, she’s attacked by a possessed coworker and saved by a mysterious, wise-cracking sorcerer named Eddy. He drags Elizabeth and Hugh—a skeptical scholar of the occult—to Europe, where he introduces them to his three magical celebrity friends. Once there, Eddy explains the group’s mission: preventing a Demiurge—a creature out of Gnostic Christian mythology—from fulfilling the visions of doom in the Book of Revelation. The Demiurge has been drawing power from the misguided beliefs in the Mayan apocalypse and is set to start the destruction on Dec. 21st, 2012. Through ritual magic and a series of psychedelic experiences, the group learns that Elizabeth is the key to taking down the Demiurge, though she can’t imagine how she will be the one to stop Armageddon.

“OK. Seriously. Please. Tell me exactly who you are, what you’re doing, how you made my phone fly into your hand, and why the fuck my co-worker just assaulted me,” said Elizabeth, the last of her patience dwindling.

“You can call me Eddy,” he said. “The milk is for the protection spirit I called to keep us safe for now. As for your coworker… well, she’s possessed by a qlippoth, which is pretty much a vampiric assemblage of cravings, guilt, self-loathing, and a whole other mess of nasty emotional energies. Most are made when the sad and pathetic losers of the world jerk off to some of the sickest porn the bowels of the Internet can shit out. Obviously, there’s a fair number of these icky beasties around. This particular one’s been coalescing around your back alley. Probably feeding off of your used tampons or something. They like those. Used condoms and jerk-off rags too. Genital fluids are like bonbons for these things. And sometimes they’re able to possess people with very little emotional control and/or intelligence during certain astronomical phases. My guess is your coworker wasn’t exactly a shining example of emotional stability. As for the phone: involving the cops would just complicate things, so I used a little arcane prestidigitation to take it from you for the moment.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” asked Elizabeth.

“OK, we need to skip past the whole ‘Spirits? Magic? Are you crazy?’ shit because we’ve got a hungry, demon-possessed hippie trying to break in and drink our nether juices, and I for one don’t want that chick anywhere near my junk.”

Blog Tour ‘n’ Q&A – Foul Deed Will Rise

This is something new for me, and I’m delighted to welcome Elizabeth Ireland to my blog to answer a few questions about her writing life.

But, first, let’s take a look at her latest book:

Foul Deeds Will Rise

By 1875, Lillian Nolan believes she has successfully shut off any connection to the spirit world. That winter she is thrilled when she wins the role of Ophelia in a new production of Hamlet in her home town of Chicago. Everything changes when the body of the managing director is found sprawled across the steps of the dress circle and all the investors’ money is missing. Lillian fears, once again, her career is over before it begins.

After her dearest friend is arrested for murder, Lillian commits herself to discovering the truth. Her search is complicated by a strange man who is following her, the romantic overtures of her co-star, and a reunion with an old nemesis. But nothing is what it seems. What she does find puts a member of her own family at risk and leads to the unmasking of the killer with lethal consequences for herself.

THE BACKSTAGE MYSTERY SERIES

Tagline: Life upon the wicked stage can be deadly.

Set against the backdrop of the Gilded Age, the Backstage Mystery Series stars Lillian Nolan, an unconventional member of Chicago’s upper class who dreams of a career of fortune and fame in the theater. Talented and ambitious, she possesses a hidden skill which she is extremely reluctant to use—the ability to communicate with those who have died and now live in the world of “The Beyond.”

The series chronicles her adventures in which she continually becomes enmeshed in solving mysteries which often require her accessing the realm of the paranormal. Filled with an incredible cast of characters—factual, fictional, and sometimes non-physical—who either help or hinder her quest for the truth, the stories take place during a a period considered to be the golden age of both acting and spiritualism in America.

Author Bio

Elizabeth Ireland discovered her passion for theater early. After receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees in Theater, she accepted a teaching position in a vibrant performing arts department at a college in northern Illinois. For ten years, she taught, directed and ran front-of-house operations. American Theater History—particularly that of the 19th century—has always been of particular interest to her.

She has been a quarter-finalist and a semi-finalist for the Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Two of her screenplays have been optioned, but remain unproduced. Her nonfiction work, Women of Vision: Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Lives, was published in 2008. Her work has also been published in a collection of paranormal short stories, Paramourtal: Tales of Undying Love and Loving the Undead. She lives in metro Atlanta with her ever-patient husband, and two quirky dachshunds.

Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?

Yes. I even purchased the URL for it in order to create a separate website. Like the main character in my series, I created it using my maternal grandmother’s middle name and maiden name. I may use it sometime in the future if I decide to write a book in an entirely different genre—or I may not use it at all. Right now it’s more of a Plan B.

It’s always good to have a Plan B, and who knows where it may lead!

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I have started a lot of projects that are in various stages of completion. They just didn’t hold my attention, or the ideas petered out. So I have shelved them. I feel no idea is every lost – I can always come back to it or use it as a part of something else. I also have a number of screenplays I wrote which I intend someday to turn into books.

I doubt you’re alone with this; every writer I know has more unfinished projects than finished ones. It’s almost a rite of passage.

How do you select the names of your characters?

Since I write in the historical mystery genre, I try to pick names that would sound like they come from that period. I have a number of books on American Theater History and one of them is a pictorial history that shows many actors from the early 19th century to the late 20th century. I sometimes choose a first name from one actor and blend it with a second name from another. Or I may use the name of an actual actor but change the spelling. I do find that I tend toward the same sounding names and in the first three books used the surname of O’Neill for 3 different characters! I eliminated two of them to ensure that I ended up with only one O’Neill.

That sounds like a fun way to lose a few hours; not that I’m encouraging procrastination, of course! 😉

What was your hardest scene to write?

Love scenes. I want to put them in, but make them romantic rather than graphic. This is a skill that needs a lot of practice. I really admire a writer who can do that well and I recognize it’s just not my forte. However, I believe it is a skill and like anything else, I can improve upon it.

Practice makes perfect, or so they say. I’m with you on this, though – these are some of the hardest scenes to pull off. Kudos to those who can.

What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?

If it was absolutely certain that it would make me a better writer, I would give up sugar! Since I’m a chocoholic, this would be quite a feat. But I would gladly do it if that would improve my writing.

Now that would be a challenge!

What is your favorite childhood book?

This is no contest. I have to say it is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. That is a book that’s got everything—an unloved orphan, a tortured hero, a mystery involving a mad wife, a climactic ending. It’s also extremely well written. I must have read it six times when I was going through school.

Jane Eyre is one of my favourites too. I read it at school, and have re-read it several times since. Great minds, eh? 😉

Well, thank you Elizabeth for sharing an insight into your life as a writer. I’ll wish you luck on the sugar thing, and on continued success … and lots more books, too.
